Our antenatal course covers what your choices are in pregnancy, labour and as a new parent from the perspective of an honest, friendly midwife. Plus, you’ll make a group of local friends who are also preparing to meet their baby!
Our reviews speak for themselves - this really is an antenatal course with a difference.
Making a group of local friends during an antenatal course is a given, but you deserve to come away feeling informed and positive about your birth experience too!
What we cover:
All types of birth experience, including what happens during vaginal, caesarean and assisted births, how to prepare for giving birth to your baby, and how to write preferences for every birth
How to make your labour as comfortable as possible and how to keep active, including using a rebozo scarf and massage techniques for pregnancy and labour - equipping your birth partner as well as you!
The many choices you will most likely come across during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period
The birth partner’s vital role throughout the labour process and the postnatal period
Postnatal recovery after vaginal and caesarean births and how to prepare for the postnatal period, including writing a postnatal plan
Different methods of feeding your baby, including how to establish breastfeeding and common issues that can occur. We also discuss formula feeding, how to bottle feed and expressing
Plus- you get ongoing support via WhatsApp from a midwife as well as a thorough handout with all of the information in to refer back to which is invaluable!
Why is our course different from more mainstream antenatal courses?
It’s written, developed and taught by a midwife, unlike lots of antenatal courses out there. We believe that it’s important that you know how to navigate the maternity system and what actually helps during labour as most people give birth within the NHS! Someone with experience in the maternity system is best placed to help you with this and can help prepare you for whatever happens.
It’s 50% focused on giving birth and different birth experiences and 50% focused on postnatal, feeding and baby care as we believe preparation for the postnatal period is equally as important!
You know who your antenatal teacher is before you sign up! An important part of the course is the support you get from the midwife running your course so this is important! Check out the about me sections for our locations around the UK to get to know who’s in your area!
The antenatal course helps you know what all of your choices are around birth, the postnatal period and feeding your baby. We believe that decisions should be presented in a non-judgemental way and that you deserve all of the information! All births are different but you deserve to feel in control and supported whatever you decide and whatever happens.
You get a fab group of friends expecting a baby at the same time as you in your area which is important, especially during maternity leave!
Our course is super inclusive! All types of family are welcome and there are no old-fashioned patriarchal messages here! Birth partners are prepared just as much for birth and the postnatal period and given important tools to help!

Hello! My name is Kate and I'm a midwife living and working as an NHS midwife in Taunton, Somerset.
Before midwifery I worked all over the place, I was a geographer, a reserve officer in the Royal Navy, a property manager, an administrator in a dental practice and an estate agent. I came to Midwifery as I wanted to put my feminism into practice and I am so glad I did! I love working on the Birth Centre and seeing families out in the community. Being a midwife is central to who I am now, I spend most of my time living and breathing it.
My goal as Taunton’s Village Midwife is to create a community, for you, your partner, and your growing family - which I feel like we have achieved in Taunton through our courses and free meet ups called ‘The No Sleep Club’ since I started teaching. I aim to give you the time, space, and information to enter birth and parenthood with choices and agency. I am always ready to chat about birth and babies for a few hours! I originally applied to join Sophie’s team because her vision was so aligned with mine. I want to enhance the service I provide as an NHS Midwife and give families all the information they need and want to make informed choices about their antenatal care and birth.
Behind the scenes I spend time reading everything under the sun about midwifery and birth, slowly painting my entire house green, writing and overthinking about life and the universe, snuggling my dog Bonnie, cycling around Taunton on my pink bicycle and attempting to keep my houseplants alive.
For information about the course dates or to enquire about 1:1 antenatal course or postnatal support options, you can email Kate at kate@thevillagemidwife.co.uk
When I first started my midwifery training, my first learning pledge was to deliver individualised, person-centred care with compassion. This has become the cornerstone of my midwifery practice.
Outside of midwifery, I love spending time with my mum, my niece and nephew, and my incredible circle of friends. I am surrounded and supported by fantastic women who champion one another endlessly. I enjoy cooking, hosting long dinners with friends, and trying new crafts like embroidery and lino-cutting.
A few years ago, I adopted a stray cat who is bonkers and entertains me no end. I have a houseplant addiction and cannot walk past a ‘reduced to clear’ section without hoping I can rescue and resurrect a pile of sticks into something green and blossoming, and I’m fast running out of windowsills…
I’m so excited to be working with Sophie and the other midwives at The Village Midwife. I look forward to sharing information and skills in a safe, non-judgmental space, equipping you and your birth partners to confidently weigh up options, make decisions about your care, and advocate for yourselves and one another. I can’t wait to meet you!

Hello! I’m Katie,
Best investment ever
My husband and I attended Kate's antenatal course in Taunton, Somerset, and it was the best decision we ever made. Such an empowering and safe space, she has taught us so much, given us plenty of reassurance without ever being patronising. I honestly recommend it to any first time parents, as it is such an eye-opener and has brought us so much peace.
100% recommended!
I cannot recommend this course enough! We are expecting our first child so we wanted to be as ready as possible. We read lots of book but nothing compares to live sessions where you can ask questions. It was incredibly informative, open and empowering experience. Kate is very passionate and approachable person which makes this experience even better. She helped us to put all the information into the right context and left us feeling very positive about parenthood
We can't recommend this course highly...
We can't recommend this course highly enough for any expectant parent! Kate, our midwife, was phenomenal. Her deep knowledge and non-judgmental nature instantly made us feel comfortable and confident to ask anything. She thoroughly prepared us for birth, delving into the science behind it and discussing options from natural births to C-sections. Plus, her breastfeeding tips were incredibly helpful. We genuinely felt equipped for birth and the postpartum journey, no matter our personal expectations. The course was perfectly structured, covering every essential topic. If you're considering The Village Midwife, don't hesitate – these classes offer immense value! Thank you so much, Kate, for your amazing support.
